Its a severe form of acid reflux which can affect many individuals of all ages. It is when acid from the stomach leaks into the oesophagus and causes a burning sensation in the chest.
Acid reflux and heartburn can be triggered by many factors such as eating a few hours before going to bed or eating too much and lying down after eating can cause an acid reflux flare up.
There are several different things you can do to prevent and help with the symptoms of acid reflux:
- Stop smoking; this increases your risk of acid reflux
- Avoid some foods and drinks; Some foods and drinks including spicy foods, chocolate, tomatoes, coffee and alcoholic drinks have been suspected to making symptoms worse
- Weight; being overweight puts extra pressure on the stomach, encouraging acid reflux
There are a wide variety of treatments available to help reduce the symptoms of acid reflux. The most commonly used treatment is a group of medicines called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).
